Australia is in the grip of a McCarthyist panic, with much of the political class concerned that Labor’s recent budget may in fact be “communist”. Or, as Pauline Hanson succinctly put it: “Marxist, socialist, communist”.

The Daily Tele set the post-budget tone , describing changes to investor tax breaks as a “big-taxing communist manifesto” (“Your Capital His Gain”, it added, depicting the “C” as a hammer and sickle — nice ). Liberal leader Angus Taylor has been sprinkling “socialism” into his high school-level speeches, warning of Labor’s “socialist vision” ( come for the ominous music, stay to hear him accidentally say “prime manister”).
