The Icelandic Marine Research Institute (Hafrannsóknastofnun) has announced plans to protect a large portion of the seabed off the south coast of Iceland. The proposed protected area spans from Háfadjúp in the west to Papagrunn in the east, extending down to the ridges and valleys that form the edge of the continental shelf.
