Ο ισχυρός σεισμός των 7,8 Ρίχτερ που χτύπησε την περασμένη εβδομάδα τις Φιλιππίνες ανύψωσε τον βυθό έως και 2 μέτρα, βγάζοντας έξω από το νερό κοράλλια και βλάπτοντας τη θαλάσσια ζωή, σύμφωνα με το υπουργείο Περιβάλλοντος της χώρας.
Τουλάχιστον 61 άνθρωποι έχασαν τη ζωή τους και άλλοι 40 εξακολουθούν να αγνοούνται μετά τον σεισμό που έπληξε τα ανοικτά της νότιας ακτής του νησιού Μιντανάο την περασμένη Δευτέρα, σύμφωνα με τα επικαιροποιημένα στοιχεία της υπηρεσίας διαχείρισης καταστροφών.
Οι κάτοικοι ανέφεραν για πρώτη φορά το γεωλογικό φαινόμενο της ανύψωσης της ακτής δύο ημέρες μετά τον σεισμό. Η ανύψωση επέκτεινε την ακτογραμμή έως και 200 μέτρα σε ορισμένα σημεία.
Το επίκεντρο του σεισμού ήταν στην τάφρο του Κοταμπάτο, η οποία βρίσκεται σε απόσταση μόλις 50 χλμ. από τις ακτές του νησιού Μιντανάο. Είναι μια περιοχή συχνής σεισμικής δραστηριότητας: μόλις τον Ιανουάριο καταγράφηκε «σμήνος» χιλιάδων μικρών σεισμών.
Αξιωματούχος που μίλησε στο AFP δήλωσε ότι δεν μπορούσαν ακόμη να προσδιορίσουν με ακρίβεια την έκταση της περιοχής που έχει πληγεί, δεδομένου του μεγέθους που θα απαιτούσε η έρευνα.
