Starbucks is closing stores in South Korea earlier for a lesson on sensitive history following a controversial campaign

Starbucks launched a 'Tank Day' campaign in South Korea last month to promote reusable tumblers. The campaign was launched on May 18, which marks the anniversary of the Gwangju Uprising, a sensitive event in modern South Korean history where hundreds of civilians were killed during a military crackdown.

Starbucks lanceerde vorige maand een 'Tank Day'-campagne  in Zuid-Korea. De slogan moest promotie maken voor de 'tumbler'-bekers, de herbruikbare drinkbeker die je voor zowel warme als koude dranken kan gebruiken.

Veel Koreanen begrepen de slogan vooral als een verwijzing naar het bloedbad van Gwangju. Zo werd de campagne gelanceerd op 18 mei, de dag dat in Gwangju een pro-democratisch protest van de toenmalige hard neergeslagen werd door het leger met militairen, tanks en helikopters.

Honderden burgers kwamen toen om het leven. Het is een van de meest gevoelige momenten in de moderne Zuid-Koreaanse geschiedenis.
