At the booth

The author reflects on an encounter with two young girls who showed great interest in philosophical, theological, and other 'serious' book titles. The conversation turned into a discussion about topics such as gender identity, women's positions, perceived male value, the necessity of sexual relationships, critical thinking, human nature, stereotypes, societal pressures, and the boundaries that protect individuals from falling into complete relativism.

Zdaj že kar hitro ocenim, koga utegnejo nagovoriti naslovi knjig, ki jih prodajam, kdo pa je samo radovedni mimoidoči. A ti dve dekleti sta me popolnoma presenetili. Ustavili sta se in oči so se jima zasvetile ob filozofskih, teoloških in drugih »resnobnih« naslovnicah. Potarnali sta glede denarja, in ko sem obljubila študentski popust, sta me osupnili, da sta precej mlajši ... devetošolka in srednješolka! Neverjetno prostodušno in z zaupljivostjo, ki te gane, sta mi začeli odstirati svoj košček zapletenega najstniškega sveta: hitro je stekla debata o spolni identiteti, o položaju žensk in (domnevni) večvrednosti moških, o tem, zakaj sploh moramo biti v spolu in zakaj nas tako zelo določa. Tudi o tem, kaj je sploh kritično mišljenje, kaj je človeška narava, kaj so stereotipi in ozki predali, v katere nas »tlači družba«, in kaj resnična ograja, ki nas varuje pred zdrsom v brezno popolnega relativizma.
