Nach dem Willen von Meta sollen sich WhatsApp-Nutzer vor allem an den integrierten KI-Assistenten wenden.

Die EU-Kommission zwingt den Messengerdienst WhatsApp , KI-Assistenten anderer Anbieter in der Europäischen Union wieder kostenlos zuzulassen. Der US-Konzern Meta , zu dem WhatsApp gehört, müsse die einstweiligen Maßnahmen innerhalb von fünf Werktagen umsetzen, teilte die EU-Kommission mit.
EU-Wettbewerbskommissarin Teresa Ribera sagte, WhatsApp sei für
KI-Unternehmen ein wichtiger Zugangspunkt zu Verbrauchern in Europa. Mit
der Entscheidung bewahre man auch die Wahlfreiheit der Bürgerinnen und
Bürger hinsichtlich der KI-Assistenten, die sie mit
WhatsApp nutzen möchten.
EU-Kommission verbietet Meta-Gebühr für externe KI-Firmen
Meta hatte die Funktion im vergangenen Jahr für alle Firmen gesperrt, deren Hauptgeschäft künstliche Intelligenz ist. Der Zugang zur hauseigenen Meta-KI blieb bestehen. Der Konzern wollte damit verhindern, dass Anbieter ihre Chatbots – nach dem Vorbild von ChatGPT oder Google Gemini – über WhatsApp laufen lassen und sich so die Reichweite und die Server von Meta zunutze machen.
Auf Druck der EU-Kommission hob Meta die Sperr e anschließend auf, führte
aber eine zusätzliche Gebühr ein. Nach Einschätzung der Kommission kommt
diese einer Sperre gleich.
WhatsApp benachteiligt laut Kommission europäische Entwickler
Meta kündigte an, vor Gericht gegen die Entscheidung der Kommission vorzugehen. Eine
Sprecherin warf der Kommission vor, ihre Kompetenzen zu überschreiten. Die EU hingegen kritisiert, dass Metas Vorgehen insbesondere europäischen KI-Entwicklern einen Nachteil verschaffen und dazu beitragen könnte, dass sie langfristig vom Markt verschwinden.
Die Anordnung der Kommission ist vorläufig und gilt, bis sie die Ermittlungen in dem Verfahren offiziell abgeschlossen hat. Eine gesetzliche Frist dafür gibt es nicht. Stellt die Kommission am Ende des Verfahrens einen Verstoß gegen EU-Wettbewerbsrecht fest, droht Meta ein weiteres Bußgeld.
