Die Berliner CDU hat Kai Wegner als ihren Spitzenkandidaten nominiert. Auf einem Landesparteitag in Berlin-Neukölln stimmte eine breite Mehrheit der Delegierten für den CDU-Landesvorsitzenden und Regierenden Bürgermeister. Bei der geheimen Wahl entfielen auf ihn 252 der 272 abgegebenen Stimmen - ein Anteil von 92,6 Prozent.

Zuvor hatte Wolfram Wickert, ein Delegierter aus dem Kreisverband Mitte, überraschend seine Gegenkandidatur erklärt. Die CDU brauche einen anderen Spitzenkandidaten, sagte er zur Begründung. Das neue Abgeordnetenhaus von Berlin wird am 20. September gewählt.

Wegner will weiter Chef im Roten Rathaus bleiben

In seiner mehr als einstündigen, kämpferischen Rede hatte Wegner (53) auf Erfolge der schwarz-roten Regierungspolitik hingewiesen und seinen Anspruch deutlich gemacht, die Regierung auch nach der Wahl anführen zu wollen.

Bei der vergangenen Wahl zum Abgeordnetenhaus im Februar 2023 hatte die CDU mit ihm als Spitzenkandidat 28,2 Prozent erreicht und war mit Abstand stärkste Kraft geworden. In den jüngsten Umfragen schnitt die CDU mit 19 bis 20 Prozent deutlich schlechter ab. Wegner stand in den vergangenen Monaten auch in der eigenen Partei in der Kritik.
