Gunnlaugur Árni Sveinsson mun í dag opna nýjan kafla í íslenskri íþróttasögu er hann verður fyrsti íslenski kylfingurinn til að spila á U.S. Open risamótinu í golfi í karlaflokki. Gunnlaugur hefur komist hátt í háskólagolfinu í Bandaríkjunum og unnið sig í gegnum mikla erfiðleika í aðdraganda mótsins.
Gunnlaugur er á meðal fremstu áhugakylfinga í heimi og með LSU háskólanum hefur hann gert sig gildandi undanfarin tvö ár. Þessi tvítugi strákur ætlar sér langt í íþróttinni og í gegnum bráðabana á lokaúrtökumóti á dögunum tryggði hann sér sæti á U.S. Open.
Gunnlaugur hefur leik á U.S. Open klukkan 18.20 í kvöld en bein útsending frá mótinu hefst klukkan fjögur á Sýn Sport.
Íslendingurinn flaug hátt strax á sínu fyrsta ári í háskólagolfinu en hefur mátt þola hindranir, erfiðleika, á sínu öðru ári.
„Hann hefur átt erfitt vor. Það hafa átt sér stað hlutir sem hann hefur enga stjórn á,“ segir Jake Amos, þjálfari Gunnlaugs í samtali við íþróttadeild Sýnar. „Hann var frábær síðasta haust þegar að tímabilið hjá okkur byrjaði, vann til að mynda mót og endaði í topp tíu á öðru móti. Hann var á góðri siglingu en svo greip lífið inn í. Hann varð veikur, það varð fráfall í fjölskyldu hans og svo meiddist hann.
Það var þá sem hann lærði mikið um sjálfan sig, upplifði mótlæti og sá að ekki alltaf yrði um ljúfa og fullkomna siglingu að ræða. Gunnlaugur Árni í raun náði ekki sínu besta fram á vellinum fyrr í síðustu tveimur umferðum okkar á tímabilinu bara í þar síðustu viku. Það að hann hafi síðan mætt viku seinna og sýnt þessa frammistöðu sem hann sýndi í lokaúrtökumótinu sýnir okkur að hann hefur andlega séð komist yfir alla þá erfiðu hluti sem hentu hann í vor. Að ganga í gegnum þetta gerði hann miklu sterkari.“
Í dag reynir hann svo fyrir sér á einu af risamótum hvers árs í golfheiminum þar sem að allir bestu kylfingarnir verða. Gunnlaugur hefur fengið dýrmæta reynslu í æfingarhringjum með nokkrum af þeim bestu á borð við Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau og Patrick Reed.
„Ég tel að hann muni ekki láta það koma sér úr jafnvægi að vera í kringum þessar stjörnur. Hann verður sér til sóma. Ég sagði það við hann að láta sér ekki koma það á óvart ef einhverjir kylfingar á mótinu staldri við þegar að hann slær boltann. Hann er það góður.“
