Il Servizio geologico degli Stati Uniti (Usgs) ha registrato u n terremoto di magnitudo 6.4 che ha colpito oggi (domenica 12 maggio) la zona ovest del confine tra Messico e Guatemala .Â

Il terremoto, avvenuto poco prima delle 6 del mattino, ha avuto il suo epicentro nell'Oceano Pacifico, 17 chilometri a sud-ovest di Brisas Barra de Suchiate, vicino alla costa del Chiapas, a una profondità di 75,4 chilometri .Â

L'agenzia nazionale di prevenzione catastrofi del Guatemala ha condiviso sugli account social foto di piccole frane sulle autostrade nella regione di Quetzaltenango e di grandi crepe nei muri di un ospedale a San Marcos , fortunatamente non sono stati segnalati incidenti fatali.

Didier Solares, un funzionario della protezione civile di Suchiate, ha confermato che non sono stati segnalati gravi danni : «Per fortuna tutto è a posto. Stiamo parlando con le aziende delle zone rurali via radio e non c'è nulla, non ci sono danni grazie a Dio».Â

Il terremoto mattutino ha comunque spaventato le persone. «Qui ci siamo alzati perché abbiamo il servizio di allarme sismico . L'allarme mi ha svegliato perché arriva 30 secondi prima (del terremoto)», ha raccontato un residente.Â
