Freitasová podle serveru O Globo zaplatila organizátorům seskoků asi 180 brazilských realů (736 korun). Chtěla si vyzkoušet rope jumping neboli kyvadlový skok. Oproti bungee jumpingu, který se skáče na gumovém laně, u rope jumpingu je lano nepružné, horolezecké. To se připíná k postroji, který měla Freitasová kolem pasu a stehen. Po seskoku by se kyvadlově rozhoupala.
Jenže došlo k fatálnímu selhání organizátorů. Nasadili jí postroj, připnuli karabiny, dali jí i helmu, jenže zapomněli na to hlavní – připojit lano. Následně ji tři z nich zvedli nad hlavu, šli k okraji mostu a hodili ji do prázdna. „Lano! Lidi, lano!“ vykřikovali přítomní. Studentka spadla z výšky asi 40 metrů, byla na místě mrtvá.
Lidé se ji přesto podle serveru CNN Brasil pokoušeli resuscitovat až do příjezdu brazilské záchranné služby.

Děsivou situaci natočil kdosi z mnoha přítomných, kteří jsou na videu slyšet. V tuto chvíli není zřejmé, zda to byl doprovod Freitasové nebo někdo, kdo měl skákat po ní. Snoubenec studentky se z tragédie zhroutil a skončil v nemocnici.
Policisté zadrželi několik organizátorů, celkem šest lidí. Část z nich se pokusila utéct. Server O Globo se bezvýsledně snažil kontaktovat společnosti Entre Cordas a Ih Voei, jejichž názvy se objevují na uniformách zaměstnanců.
Vyšetřovatelé zvažují, že případ překvalifikují na zabití s vědomým rizikem, což je závažnější než zabití z nedbalosti. V takovém případě by organizátorům mohlo hrozit i deset let za mřížemi.
