Onsdag kveld entrer VMs kanskje største stjerne Houston stadion.
Når Cristiano Ronaldo (41) leder sitt Portugal ut på banen i deres åpningskamp, vil han igjen sette rekord og bli historisk.
Aldri før årets VM har en spiller deltatt i seks verdensmesterskap i fotball.
Dette er en rekord han og erkerivalen Lionel Messi tar samtidig , Messi 16 timer før Ronaldo – garantert til irritasjon for portugiseren som er oppslukt av tall og rekorder.
For tallene hans er enestående.
41 år har Portugals kaptein blitt, på en episk jakt etter karrierens mål nummer 1000. For Portugal har han svimlende 143 nettkjenninger, mer enn noen annen spiller i verden.
Men når han har snakket om VM har trofégrossisten vært overraskende defensiv.

Ingen VM-drøm
Få kan konkurrere med karrieren til den portugisiske superstjernen. Fem gullballer, fem mesterligatrofeer, tre engelske seriemesterskap og to spanske serietitler er bare et utvalg av Ronaldos meritter.
I 2016 vant han også endelig et trofé med Portugal, da de vant europamesterskapet .
Det eneste som mangler? VM-tittel med hjemlandet.

Likevel virker det ikke som den maniske mål- og titteljagende spissen er så opptatt av å vinne verdens største fotballturnering.
– Hvis du spør meg: Cristiano, er det en drøm å vinne VM?
– Nei, det er ikke en drøm.
Dette svarte Ronaldo på sitt eget spørsmål i et intervju med Piers Morgan .
– Bak de sitatene er det en veldig dårlig skjult agenda, mener NRKs fotballekspert Carl-Erik Torp.
– Jeg synes at det er småpinlig. Jeg får en litt pinlig følelse i kroppen når jeg ser det intervjuet. Ronaldo er jo typen til å skape de narrativene som passer han, sier Torp.
– Å marginalisere og dysse ned det som er det største en fotballspiller kan oppleve, det er veldig merkelig, og det er åpenbart at han ikke hadde gjort det hvis det var motsatt. Da hadde han kjørt på med VM som et argument for hvorfor han er den største gjennom tidene.
– SMÅPINLIG: Det sier fotballeksperten om Ronaldo sine uttalelser. Han tror Ronaldo kan gjøre mer skade enn nytte for Portugal under VM.
Og med «motsatt» mener Torp dersom Ronaldo hadde vært i skoene til sin argeste rival Lionel Messi: Han som for mange befestet sin posisjon som tidenes beste fotballspiller da han endelig vant VM med Argentina i 2022.
Torp mener at Ronaldo, selv med et VM-gull i lomma, vil være bak argentineren i den evige debatten om hvem som er tidenes beste.
– For min del så endrer ikke et VM-gull hvem som er best, selv om man kan argumentere for at det er likestilt dersom man ser på tall og titler, sier Torp.
Ressurs eller byrde for Portugal?
De siste årene har det vært mye fokus på den aldrende Ronaldos rolle og posisjon på landslaget.
Allerede under VM for fire år siden blusset diskusjonen opp om hvorvidt Portugal egentlig var bedre stilt uten Ronaldo.

På spørsmål om Ronaldo i større grad vil være et problem enn en ressurs i årets VM, tar Torp en lang tenkepause før han svarer:
– Svaret på det spørsmålet er at jeg er veldig usikker.
Diskusjonene til tross: Ronaldo har levert mange mål i Saudi-Arabia , og var Portugals toppscorer i kvalifiseringen.
– Det er ikke snakk om en spiller som har mistet det helt. Men jeg tenker også at dette portugisiske laget har enorme kvaliteter – det er et av de sterkeste portugisiske lagene noensinne når du ser hele troppen – men de blir likevel ikke trukket fram som den største utfordreren til å gå hele veien.
Hvem har størst sjanse til å vinne vm?

Torp mener spissplassen er blant årsakene til at Portugal ikke seiler opp som den største favoritten.
– Og for meg så handler det mye om Ronaldo, og at han er over toppen. Hans posisjon, aura og status, det klarer han ikke lenger å forsvare med det han presterer på banen. Problemet til Portugal er at de ikke har noen åpenbare erstattere, sier han.
På topp er Gonçalo Ramos (PSG) den nærmeste utfordreren.
– Han har ikke startet noen av de viktige kampene til PSG, og det er vanskelig å forsvare at han skal starte. Nå står ikke Cristiano Ronaldo i veien for noen på samme måte som man har følt tidligere, forklarer NRK-eksperten.
PÅ TOPP I SAUDI: Denne sesongen ble Ronaldo seriemester i Saudi-Arabia der han leverte 28 mål på 30 kamper.
– De er en outsider, de er blant lagene som er bak de aller beste, sier Torp, og anslår at Portugal er blant de fem-seks største favorittene til å gå hele veien.
