R4 in Merelbeke closed tonight for transport of 75 tons of heavy lock door

The R4 highway around Ghent will be closed overnight in Merelbeke to allow the transportation of a 75-ton steel sluice gate to the sluice complex on the Ringvaart. The closure runs from 10 PM tonight to 6 AM tomorrow morning. The new gate will replace an existing one showing cracks and deformation at the bottom. De R4, de ring rond Gent, gaat in Merelbeke vanavond en vannacht dicht in de richting van Gent. Dat is nodig om een nieuwe sluisdeur te transporteren naar het sluizencomplex op de Ringvaart in Merelbeke. De nieuwe sluisdeur vervangt een oude, die scheuren vertoont en vervormd is aan de onderkant. Om de sluisdeur te kunnen vervoeren, moet de weg volledig vrij zijn.

De Vlaamse Waterweg sluit de R4 in Merelbeke af tussen 22.00 uur vanavond en 06.00 uur morgenochtend.

Dat gebeurt om een reusachtige reservesluisdeur van de opslagplaats naar het sluizencomplex te transporteren. De reservedeur is een stalen constructie van 20 op 9 meter en weegt 75 ton. Die deur vervangt een sluisdeur die meerdere scheuren en een aanzienlijke vervorming vertoont.

Zelfrijdende voertuigen, speciaal ontworpen voor uitzonderlijk vervoer, brengen de sluisdeur van de opslagplaats aan de overkant van de R4 naar het sluizencomplex. Het transport duurt minstens 2 uur.

Als de nieuwe sluisdeur aan het sluizencomplex is aangekomen, zal een drijvende kraan de deur op de juiste plek tillen.

De reservesluisdeur ligt klaar om getransporteerd te worden.
