Danas Srpska pravoslavna crkva obeležava Svetog apostola Jermu , jednog od Sedamdesetorice apostola i episkopa Filipopolja, čije ime zauzima posebno mesto u ranoj hrišćanskoj tradiciji. Ovaj svetitelj ostao je upamćen kao propovednik vere, autor znamenitog dela "Pastir" i čovek koji je kroz lična iskušenja pronašao put ka pokajanju i duhovnom uzdizanju.

Sveti Jerma pominje se u Poslanici apostola Pavla Rimljanima (Rim 16, 14), što svedoči o njegovom značaju među prvim Hristovim sledbenicima. Iako je bio grčkog porekla, veliki deo života proveo je u Rimu , gde je sticao ugled i bogatstvo. Međutim, prema crkvenom predanju, zbog svojih grehova i grehova svojih sinova izgubio je sve što je imao i zapao u siromaštvo. Upravo kroz taj težak period započeo je njegov duhovni preobražaj.

Najpoznatiji događaj iz njegovog života vezuje se za javljanje anđela pokajanja . Dok se molio, Jermi se ukazao čovek u beloj odeći sa štapom u ruci i saopštio mu da je poslat od Boga kako bi ga vodio do kraja života. Na osnovu tih otkrovenja nastala je knjiga "Pastir", jedno od najpoznatijih dela ranohrišćanske književnosti, koje je vekovima čitano među vernicima kao pouka o veri, pokajanju i moralnom životu.

Anđeo je Jermi predao dvanaest duhovnih zapovesti

1. verovati u Boga

2. živeti u prostoti i nevinosti, ne zlostavljati i davati milostinju svakom ko prosi

3. ljubiti istinu i izbegavati laž

4. čuvati celomudrenost u pomislima

5. učiti se trpljenju i velikodušnosti

6. znati da uza svakog čoveka pristavljen je po jedan dobar i po jedan zao duh

7. bojati se Boga i ne bojati se đavola

8. činiti svako dobro i uzdržavati se od svakog zla dela

9. moliti se Bogu iz dubine duše s verom da će se molitva naša uslišiti

10. čuvati se od tuge, kao sestre sumnje i gneva

11. ispitivati istinita i lažna proročanstva

12. čuvati se od svake zle želje

Kao episkop Filipopolja, Sveti Jerma neumorno je propovedao hrišćanstvo i širio Jevanđelje među narodom. Njegova odanost veri bila je toliko snažna da ni progoni nisu uspeli da ga pokolebaju. Na kraju je postradao mučeničkom smrću , ostavši dosledan Hristovom učenju do poslednjeg dana svog života.

Molitva:

"Apostole Sveti Jermo, moli Milostivoga Boga, da oproštaj grehova podari dušama našim."

Verovanja i običaji

U narodu postoji verovanje da je ovaj dan posebno pogodan za iskreno pokajanje, praštanje i preispitivanje sopstvenih postupaka . Stari su govorili da na Svetog Jermu valja izbegavati svađe, teške reči i ogovaranje , jer se veruje da ono što čovek tog dana poseje među ljudima može dugo ostati u njegovom životu .

Slavimo i svetog mučenika Ermija

Ostareo kao vojnik carski i u starosti postradao za Cara Hrista. Pošto ga zli sudija uzalud odvraćaše od vere Hristove i savetovaše da prinese žrtve idolima, naredi te mu kamenjem izbiše zube i nožem kožu s lica oderaše. Potom ga baciše u ognjenu peć, no on usta, sačuvan blagodaću Božjom. Potom ispi najljući otrov, koji mu dade neki volh po naredbi sudije, no taj otrov mu ništa ne nahudi. Videći to volh, toliko se iznenadi da javno ispovedi Hrista, zbog čega bi odmah mačem posečen. Potom Ermiju iskopaše oba oka, no on ne žaleći uzviknu ka sudiji: „Uzmi sebi ove oči telesne, koje gledaju sujetu sveta, ja imam oči srca, kojima jasno vidim svetlost istinitu“. Potom bi strmoglav za noge obešen, no oni koji mu to učiniše, oslepeše i teturahu se oko njega. Sveti Ermije prizva ih k sebi, stavi svoje ruke na njih i molitvom ka Gospodu povrati im vid. Videći sve ovo sudija, razjari se kao lav, pa izvadi nož i odseče glavu Božjem čoveku. Hrišćani potajno uzeše telo Ermijevo i česno sahraniše. Njegove mošti davahu iscelenje svim bolnim i nevoljnim. Postrada sveti Ermije 166. godine za vreme cara Antonina.
