V Veliki Britaniji bodo potekale volitve, ki bi lahko poleg nadomestnega poslanca prinesle tudi novega izzivalca premierja Keira Starmerja. Za mesto v parlamentu se namreč poteguje župan Manchestra Andy Burnham, ki bi se lahko nato še letos pomeril tudi na tekmi za novega vodjo laburistov in predsednika vlade.
Oglaševanje
V volilnem okraju Makerfield blizu mesta Manchester na severozahodu Anglije bo na nadomestnih volitvah približno 76.000 volivcev izbiralo poslanca, ki bo v parlamentu v Londonu po odstopu maja nadomestil Josha Simonsa .
A medtem ko tovrstnim volitvam ponavadi botruje odstop zaradi škandala ali smrt poslanca, je v ozadju tokratnih veliko več, na kocki bi bil lahko celo položaj premierja Keira Starmerja . Simons je namreč odstopil, da bi potegovanje za poslanca omogočil Andyju Burnhamu , dolgoletnemu kritiku premierja, ki bi ga lahko izzval za položaj.
Priljubljeni župan se želi vrniti v parlament, kjer je bil poslanec že med letoma 2001 in 2017, ker se v skladu s strankarskimi pravili laburistov za vodjo stranke in posledično tudi predsednika vlade lahko poteguje zgolj nekdo, ki zaseda tudi poslanski sedež.
Razprava o morebitni menjavi Starmerja, ki je na položaju od julija 2024, se je po več predhodnih škandalih, na čelu s spornim imenovanjem Petra Mandelsona za veleposlanika v Washingtonu, okrepila po poraznih rezultatih za stranko na majskih lokalnih in regionalnih volitvah.

Med možnimi izzivalci se je že ves čas omenjal 56-letni politični veteran Burnham, ki znotraj stranke pripade krilu t. i. mehke levice. V zadnjem desetletju je zrasel v enega najbolj prepoznavnih lokalnih voditeljev v državi in velja za stalen trn v peti britanskemu parlamentu in odločevalcem.
Ko je bil poslanec, je v času vlad premierjev Tonyja Blaira in Gordona Browna zasedal tudi vladne položaje. Je pa bil v preteklosti neuspešen že v dveh poskusih, da bi se zavihtel na čelo stranke, in sicer proti Edu Milibandu in Jeremyju Corbynu .
Parlament je zapustil leta 2017 in se podal v župansko bitko za Manchester, kjer si je zahvaljujoč trem zaporednim zmagam prislužil vzdevek "kralj severa", piše francoska tiskovna agencija AFP.
Tesna bitka z vodovodarjem
Glede na ankete bo tudi iz tokratnih volitev izšel kot zmagovalec, čeprav se obeta tesna bitka s kandidatom skrajno desne stranke Reform UK, vodovodarjem Robertom Kenyonom . Sedež Makerfielda namreč resda tradicionalno pripada laburistom, a je Simons denimo na zadnjih volitvah zmagal z le 5.300 glasovi večine.
Odločilna za zmago Burnhama naj bi bila prav njegova priljubljenost. K rezultatu bi lahko svoje prispevala še vloga stranke Restore Britain, ki je še bolj skrajno na desnici kot Reform. Njen kandidat naj bi osvojil osem, Burnham 45, Canyon pa 40 odstotkov glasov.
V primeru zmage bi lahko Burnham glede na nekatera poročila že hitro izzval Starmerja, drugi pa ugibajo, da bi lahko počakal na letni kongres stranke septembra. Za sprožitev tekme bi potreboval podporo 81 od 402 laburističnih poslancev, o izidu pa bi nato odločali člani stranke.
Bitki bi se lahko glede na ugibanja pridružila tudi nekdanji zdravstveni minister Wes Streeting in nekdanji obrambni minister John Healey , ki je do odstopa minuli teden sicer veljal za zvestega Starmerju.
Ankete kažejo, da bi Burnham porazil Starmerja
Glede na maja izvedeno anketo inštituta YouGov bi Burnham porazil Starmerja. Ta je nedavno posvaril, da bi tekma za vodenje stranke državo pahnila v kaos, vztrajal pa, da se je pripravljen pomeriti z izzivalci.
V sredo je presenetil z napovedjo, da bi lahko Burnhama v primeru izvolitve celo povabil v svojo vladno ekipo. "Andy je velika pridobitev. In da, želim, da ima veliko vlogo v vladi," je odgovoril na vprašanje, ali namerava politiku ponuditi ministrsko mesto.
