Britská média už tak trochu větří výměnu premiéra. „Burnhamův puč začíná,“ hlásá nejčtenější placený list v zemi Daily Mail. „Jak by vypadalo Burnhamovo premiérství,“ zní titulek na webu deníku Telegraph. S obdobným článkem přišel i list The Times.
Konec dosavadního vládce Downing Street Keira Starmera Britové v posledních měsících očekávali už několikrát. Proč by to tedy tentokrát mělo dopadnout jinak a premiér by mohl opravdu skončit?
Zásadně se změnila situace starosty Manchesteru Andyho Burnhama. Oblíbenec levicového křídla vládní Labouristické strany se ve čtvrtečních doplňovacích volbách stal poslancem, což je nezbytná podmínka pro to, aby se mohl ucházet o post šéfa partaje a tím i britské vlády.
Při všech dosavadních Starmerových krizových momentech chyběl v Dolní sněmovně soupeř, který by labouristy dostatečně nadchnul, aby se rozhýbali k výměně. Vždy se mluvilo i o Burnhamovi.
A ten ve čtvrtek zvítězil drtivě. V obvodu Makerfield ho podpořilo 55 procent voličů a politik přezdívaný díky své popularitě a politickým úspěchům v oblasti Manchesteru „král severu“ tak zničil naděje opoziční populistické strany Reform UK, že by jeho vstup do celostátní politiky mohla překazit.
Proč zní volání po Starmerově odchodu?
Straníky znervózňují klesající preference Labouristické strany. Zevnitř partaje dlouhodobě zaznívá, že vládě premiéra Keira Starmera se nedaří dost rychle prosazovat změny slibované v kampani před parlamentními volbami v červenci 2024. Životy britských voličů se podle nich nezlepšují dost rychle.
Už několik měsíců ale Starmera také trápí politický skandál spojený se jmenováním dnes už bývalého velvyslance ve Spojených státech Petera Mandelsona. Premiér ho do Washingtonu vyslal, přestože Downing Street věděla o jeho vazbách na zemřelého amerického finančníka a sexuálního delikventa Jeffreyho Epsteina, kterému měl Mandelson předávat citlivé státní informace.
„Poslední šance na změnu“
Premiér Burnhamovi po volebním vítězství gratuloval na sociálních sítích. V pátek ráno odešel ze svého sídla zadním vchodem a vyhnul se novinářům. Později řekl, že souboj o vedení labouristů by neprospěl zemi a dal najevo, že se nehodlá vzdát.
Burnham musí získat alespoň 81 ze 403 labouristických poslanců, aby vyvolal hlasování o novém lídrovi strany. Jeho spojenci už bezprostředně po ohlášení výsledků začali Starmerovi naznačovat, že je čas odejít.
„Myslím, že by bylo dobré, kdyby premiér tento víkend vzal na vědomí toto naprosto převratné a kolosální poselství… Myslím, že by se tím měl premiér zabývat,“ vzkázal poslanec Luke Charters. V podobném duchu se podle BBC vyjádřilo hned několik dalších poslanců.
Ambice rychle se dostat do premiérského křesla byla cítit i z Burnhamova vítězného projevu. „Každý ví, že politika nefunguje… Dnešek by se mohl, prostě mohl, stát bodem zvratu,“ prohlásil manchesterský starosta. „Tohle je poslední šance na změnu,“ dodal.
Premiér Keir Starmer se v pátek vydal na obhlídku bytového projektu na severu Londýna. S Burnhamem po jeho volebním vítězství zatím nemluvil.
Komentátor listu The Times Patrick Maguire má za to, že o Starmerově konci už je v podstatě rozhodnuto. „Jedinou otázkou zůstává, jak dlouho to bude trvat, než sir Keir Starmer přijme tuto realitu a v jaké náladě bude, až se to stane,“ poznamenal.
Kdo je tedy politik, který by se brzy mohl stát britským premiérem?
Žoviální mašina na volební vítězství
Šestapadesátiletý Burnham se v minulosti o pozici lídra ucházel už dvakrát. Od obou neúspěšných kandidatur je to ale přes deset let a řada labouristů má už delší dobu pocit, že právě Burnham je tím, co potřebují.
Od drtivého vítězství v parlamentních volbách před dvěma lety podpora Labouristické strany dramaticky klesla, což nedávno potvrdily i regionální volby . Debakl mnozí připisovali značně nepopulárnímu Starmerovi a od změny ve vedení si slibují restart strany.
Podle šetření organizace YouGov dosahuje Burnham větší popularity než kterýkoliv jiný labouristický politik v zemi a celkem 34 procent Britů má za to, že by si vedl jako premiér lépe než Starmer. Teď se jeho popularita potvrdila.
„Vítězství Andyho Burnhama v doplňovacích volbách v Makerfieldu představuje výrazný osobní úspěch,“ domnívá se zkušený analytik volebních výsledků BBC John Curtice.
„I v těch nejlepších časech podpora vládní strany téměř vždy v doplňovacích volbách padá,“ upozornil. Burnhamovi se ale podařilo dokonce navýšit procentuální podíl labouristů ve srovnání s předchozími parlamentními volbami, které pro stranu jinak dopadly mimořádně dobře.
Burnham se chtěl stát poslancem už zkraje roku, ale jeho kandidaturu zastavil stranický Národní výkonný výbor. Ačkoliv vedení trvalo na tom, že důvodem jsou důsledky, které by tento krok měl na jeho post starosty, politikovi příznivci namítali, že cílem bylo zabránit případné kandidatuře.
