Wie die Auszählung in der Nacht ergab, gewann Starmers potenzieller parteiinterner Herausforderer Andy Burnham den vakanten Parlamentssitz des Bezirks. Als „MP“ (Member of Parliament) kann Burnham nun den Premierminister in eine Führungswahl zwingen – und mit dem Rückhalt der Regierungspartei Labour ablösen.
Dies könnte der „Wendepunkt“ sein, sagte Burnham in seiner Rede am frühen Morgen. „Ich werde alles geben, was ich habe, um dafür zu sorgen, dass der Name Makerfield für immer ein Synonym dafür ist, den Wandel herbeizuführen, den dieses Land braucht – und etwas zurückzubringen, das wir verloren haben: Hoffnung, Hoffnung auf die Zukunft.“
Burnham holte in dem kleinen Wahlkreis, der normalerweise wenig mit der großen Politik in Westminster zu tun hat, 24.927 Stimmen und damit knapp 10.000 Stimmen mehr als der Kandidat der rechtspopulistischen Partei Reform UK, Robert Kenyon (15.696). Die Wahlbeteiligung lag bei 58,78 Prozent, von den weiteren Kandidatinnen und Kandidaten holte niemand mehr als 3.200 Stimmen.

Seinen Posten als Bürgermeister von Greater Manchester gibt Burnham zugunsten des Labour-Parlamentssitzes auf. „Es wird keine zweite Chance geben, aber es ist jetzt eine Chance, aus diesem Ergebnis heute Nacht eine neue Politik aufzubauen, die auf Einheit und Hoffnung gründet“, sagte Burnham. London seit Monaten tief in der Krise
Der amtierende Premierminister steht seit Monaten massiv unter Druck, mehrere Minister kehrten ihm bereits den Rücken – zuletzt der einflussreiche Verteidigungsminister John Healey . Schlagzeilen wie „Starmer am Abgrund“ oder „Das Chaos kehrt nach Westminster zurück“ häuften sich in den vergangenen Wochen in verschiedenen Abwandlungen.
Zugespitzt hatte sich die Lage insbesondere durch die herben Verluste für Labour bei den Kommunal- und Regionalwahlen in England, Schottland und Wales Anfang Mai zugunsten von Reform. Einen Rücktritt oder zumindest die Ausarbeitung eines Zeitplans für einen geregelten Rückzug hat Starmer aber bislang ausgeschlossen. Der Premier verwies immer wieder auf seinen großen Wahlsieg im Sommer 2024 und den Auftrag, das Land aus der Krise zu führen.
Entsprechend groß war die Hoffnung der Kritiker auf einen Nachwahlsieg von Burnham. Der charismatische 56-Jährige gilt als Liebling des moderat-linken Parteiflügels. In Manchester erarbeitete er sich den Ruf eines bodenständigen Machers mit Visionen. Vor knapp zehn Jahren hatte Burnham das Parlament nach einem gescheiterten Versuch, an die Parteispitze zu gelangen, verlassen. Jetzt gilt als sicher, dass er sehr bald den nächsten Versuch ankündigt.
Um Starmer herauszufordern, benötigen Burnham und weitere mögliche Kandidatinnen und Kandidaten die Unterstützung von jeweils 20 Prozent der Labour-Abgeordneten, derzeit sind das 81. Dann würde eine Urabstimmung unter den Mitgliedern und weiteren Wahlberechtigten folgen. Als aktueller Vorsitzender stünde Starmer automatisch zur Wahl. Als weiterer Bewerber gilt der als Gesundheitsminister zurückgetretene Wes Streeting.
Labour-Chaos spielt Gegnern in die Karten
Die Führungswahl wäre allerdings nicht innerhalb weniger Tage erledigt – sondern folgt einem festen Prozess, der sich über Wochen oder gar Monate ziehen könnte. Weil dieser naturgemäß von einem parteiinternen Wahlkampf begleitet werden wird, spielt das Labour-Chaos vor allem auch den Gegnern im Parlament in die Karten. Reform, die Partei von Brexit-Vorkämpfer Nigel Farage , macht seit Monaten Stimmung gegen die Regierung. Farage selbst hat kein Geheimnis daraus gemacht, selbst Premierminister werden zu wollen. Die nächste reguläre Unterhauswahl ist erst für 2029 vorgesehen.
Dass ausgerechnet ein Bezirk im Nordwesten Englands plötzlich so entscheidend für die britische Zukunft wurde, hat nichts mit der Region an sich zu tun.
