The Hungarian parliament has adopted a constitutional amendment limiting the term of office of the prime minister to a maximum of eight years, a change that would prevent former Prime Minister Viktor Orban from returning to lead the Hungarian government.

Hungarian lawmakers voted on a constitutional amendment today that limits the term of office of the prime minister to a maximum of eight years, a change that was one of the main campaign promises of new Prime Minister Peter Magyar, and prevents the possible return of Viktor Orban to the post of prime minister, according to the French news agency AFP.
The constitutional amendment was adopted in Parliament with 135 votes in favour, 50 against and six abstentions.
Even during the election campaign, Magyar argued that the possibility of an unlimited mandate could lead to a concentration of power, citing as an example his predecessor, Orban, who was accused by critics of constantly adjusting the Hungarian political system in order to maintain control over power.
Orban's Fidesz party, meanwhile, opposed the term limits, saying the measure could interfere with the will of the people.
With the amendment adopted today, Hungarian MPs also removed a provision that stressed the need for an independent body to "protect the constitutional identity" of the country, thereby paving the way for the dissolution of the Office for the Protection of Sovereignty.
The controversial agency, set up in 2024 under the previous government, has broad powers to investigate possible foreign influence, but has been targeted on several occasions, mainly against Orbán's critics.
