Two years after Sainz's victory in Mexico, Ferrari is back to winning thanks to a three-stop strategy that was really guessed, also facilitated by virtual safety due to the problem at Alonso's Aston Martin. Ending disastrous for both Kimi Antonelli and Charles Leclerc: the leader of the drivers' standings manages to overtake Russell in the final but damages the front wing and is forced to retire.

The race was won by the British team of George Russell in a Mercedes and the McLaren of the world champion Lando Norris in a McLaren, with Hamilton taking second place in the drivers' championship behind Kimi Antonelli.

Russell is there, Lewis in front of Kimi

Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc are facing very different challenges: if the Englishman fights from the first corner with Russell and Antonelli, the Monegasque will have to climb from tenth position after the mistake in turn 4 that ruined his qualifications.

Antonelli starts well, confirming that the Silver Arrows seem to have solved the problems at the launch control that had been their Achilles heel in the first races of this season. Not bad the start of Norris, who is seen in the mirrors of Kimi while Leclerc is unleashed and recovers three positions already in the first of the 66 laps on the Catalan circuit.

Antonelli approaches Hamilton while, further back, Leclerc is already putting pressure on Piastri to take the sixth place and not lose too much ground against the leading group. The Monegasque exaggerates in attacking the McLaren driver but still manages to avoid to tampon him: Charles does a half masterpiece when he gets rid of the papaya driver on the eighth lap, immediately launching himself in pursuit of Verstappen.

The Ferrari driver is the last to stop at the pits despite the high temperatures degrading the tyres more than expected: the situation stabilizes on lap 17 with Russell still ahead of Hamilton by about a second and a half while Antonelli takes advantage of a couple of slow laps to get under the duo's head.

The safety car helps Hamilton

On lap 27, Russell complains about the grip of the front tyres but Hamilton's situation is no better: the Ferrari driver loses ground compared to the two Mercedes and prefers to return to the pits to mount the averages. Three-stop strategy for Ferrari that is imitated by Red Bull: Verstappen's stop, however, is slower than expected, offering an opportunity not to lose to Charles Leclerc.

On lap 32 Hamilton is let go by Leclerc, who still mounts the hard: the two Ferraris are now in fourth and fifth place while the attention of the large audience present on the stands is on the head-to-head duel between the two Silver Arrows. When they stop first Norris and then Russell, the two Ferraris are behind the leader Kimi Antonelli but the distance between Hamilton and the Bolognese is only four seconds but the blue has yet to stop.

On lap 38, Antonelli returns to the pits, handing the lead to the Englishman of Ferrari: the leader of the drivers' standings re-enters in front of Norris' McLaren, taking advantage of a double to open up a bit of light against the reigning world champion.

A couple of laps later Russell manages to take second place to a Leclerc who is suffering a lot with the tires but to unravel the cards comes the virtual safety car after the mechanical problem that makes Fernando Alonso's Aston Martin stop. Verstappen is the first to return to the pits but is immediately imitated by the leader of the race: a quick pit stop for Hamilton, who manages to get back on the track in front of Russell with fresh tires. As soon as he resumes racing, the seven-time world champion reaches the national team on the strength of fast laps, accumulating a treasure of five seconds to 20 laps from the checkered flag.

Judging by the competitiveness of the Reds, the package of improvements brought to Catalonia, with the wing and the bottom renewed, has brought excellent results: Hamilton continues to push like a madman, further detaching the two Mercedes. Ferrari has not won at Montmelò since 2013 and the emotion of the people of the Reds is tangible: behind his back the wall asks Russell to raise the pace, since Antonelli is less than a second.
