Fernando Pimenta encerrou este domingo os Campeonatos da Europa de Canoagem de Velocidade da melhor forma possível, ao conquistar a medalha de ouro na prova de K1 5000 metros, disputada em Montemor-o-Velho. Na última regata do programa continental, o canoísta português voltou a confirmar o estatuto de um dos grandes nomes da modalidade, triunfando perante o público nacional e fechando a competição com uma imagem de domínio e resistência numa das distâncias mais exigentes do calendário europeu.

Depois de ter conquistado no sábado a medalha de bronze em K1 1000 metros — a primeira de Portugal nestes Europeus —, Fernando Pimenta regressou à água determinado a terminar a competição no lugar mais alto do pódio. E conseguiu-o numa especialidade onde tem construído uma relação de excelência ao longo da carreira, revalidando o título europeu que já lhe pertencia desde 2024 e voltando a demonstrar consistência competitiva numa fase em que muitos dos seus rivais de geração já abandonaram a elite internacional.

A vitória ganha uma dimensão particular por acontecer em casa, diante dos adeptos portugueses e em Montemor-o-Velho, palco histórico da canoagem nacional e internacional.  O Centro de Alto Rendimento, recuperado após os estragos provocados pelas tempestades no início do ano, recebeu cerca de seis centenas de atletas de dezenas de países e voltou a colocar Portugal no centro da canoagem europeia. Fernando Pimenta era uma das grandes figuras esperadas da competição e acabou por corresponder às expectativas no derradeiro dia de provas.

Aos 36 anos, o atleta de Ponte de Lima continua a demonstrar uma longevidade competitiva rara no alto rendimento. Nos dias que antecederam a competição, Pimenta assumira a ambição de disputar medalhas nas três distâncias individuais em que participou — K1 500, K1 1000 e K1 5000 —, admitindo também a importância emocional de competir em Portugal, naquela que poderá ser a sua última grande competição internacional em solo nacional.

Com o ouro em K1 5000 metros, Fernando Pimenta fechou os Europeus de Montemor-o-Velho com duas medalhas e a certeza de continuar a ser a principal referência da canoagem portuguesa, mesmo numa fase da carreira em que muitos esperariam um abrandamento competitivo.
