Portugalci, na stavnicah četrti favoriti SP-ja, so se opekli na uvodu svetovnega prvenstva v nogometu. Po hitrem vodstvu je Demokratična republika Kongo ob koncu prvega polčasa izenačila in ostalo je pri remiju v skupini K (1:1).

Potem ko so Zelenortski otoki remizirali s Španijo (0:0), je še ena afriška država presenetila favorite s Pirenejskega polotoka. DR Kongo, ki se je na svetovno prvenstvo vrnil prvič po letu 1974, takrat kot Zair, je prišel do točke proti Portugalcem. To je sploh prva točka za omenjeno afriško državo na SP-jih.

Portugalci so bili veliki favoriti pred obračunom, kar so potrdili s hitrim vodstvom v 6. minuti. Neustrašni DR Kongo je iskal priložnosti za izenačenje, kar jim je uspelo v zadnjem napadu prvega polčasa. Kljub številnim priložnostim na obeh straneh v drugem polčasu, je ostalo pri neodločenem izidu.

Oba zadetka dosegli z glavo Portugalci so izvajali pritisk od začetka, v 6. minuti pa so se že razveselili zadetka. Pedro Neto je poslal predložek z leve strani, 1,74 m visoki João Neves je najvišje skočil v kazenskem prostoru, z glavo je natančno meril v zgornji desni kot.
V 11. minuti je sledila prva priložnost DR Konga, Yoane Wissa je streljal z roba kazenskega prostora, žoga je šla malo mimo vrat.
V 18. minuti je portugalski zvezdnik Bruno Fernandes močno streljal z roba kazenskega prostora, žoga je šla mimo desne vratnice.
Kongo je iskal gol za izenačenje, v zadnjem napadu prvega polčasa ga je tudi dosegel - Arhur Masuaku je poslal predložek v kazenski prostor, Yoane Wissa pa je z glavo zabil pod prečko za izenačenje (1:1).

Drugi polčas brez zadetkov Uvod drugega polčasa je bil razburljiv. João Cancelo je zatresel mrežo, toda sodnik portugalskega zadetka ni priznal, saj je bil nogometaš Barcelone v prepovedanem položaju. V 57. minuti je Cedric Bakambu prejel lepo podajo, streljal je od blizu, zadel je vratnico.
V 69. minuti so ob odlični priložnosti zavzdihnili navijači Portugalske. Francisco Conceição je podal Cristianu Ronaldu, njegov strel od blizu pa ni bil dovolj natančen. Francisco Conceição je bil v še boljšem položaju, a Ronaldo se je odločil, da sam zaključi akcijo.
V 74. minuti je Conceição znova podal pred vrata, Ronaldo je pritekel, a znova ni našel poti do mreže.
V 77. minuti je Bakambu znova nevarno streljal z roba kazenskega prostora, a ostalo je pri 1:1.
Bruno Fernandes je v 91. minuti streljal z roba kazenskega prostora, odlična priložnost je splavala po vodi, ostalo je pri delitvi točk.
V skupini K igrata še Kolumbija in Uzbekistan, ekipa, za katere uvrstitev na prvenstvo ima veliko zaslug tudi slovenski strokovnjak Srečko Katanec.
