Third fire in a week at the Catala site in Drogenbos: "Difficult to enter due to collapse risk"

Al voor de 3e keer op nog geen week tijd moest de brandweer gisteravond uitrukken voor een brand op de Catala-site in Drogenbos. Ook vanochtend heeft de hulpverleningszone de handen vol om de laatste brandhaarden te doven, al is het vuur onder controle, zegt woordvoerder Wouter Jeanfils.

De brand ontstond opnieuw in de voormalige directeurswoning van de voormalige papierfabriek. De woning moet, net als de watertoren, volledig gerenoveerd worden bij de ontwikkeling van de site tot een nieuw bedrijvenpark . Vandaag maakt de ooit zo statige woning een troosteloze indruk.

Bij de dubbele brandstichting van vorige week wees burgemeester Alexis Calmeyn (LB-Drogenbos+) met de vinger naar "jongeren of daklozen". Hoe de brand ditmaal kon ontstaan is evenwel nog onduidelijk, klinkt het bij de brandweer. De politie opende een onderzoek.

Instortingsgevaar

"Anders dan de vorige keren was de brand gisteravond omvangrijk", zegt Jeanfils. "Door het instortingsgevaar is het gebouw moeilijk te betreden, waardoor we sommige brandhaarden moeilijk kunnen bereiken." Later vandaag pleegt de brandweerzone overleg met het lokaal bestuur over de verdere aanpak van de brand.

Die is niettemin volledig onder controle, benadrukt Jeanfils. "Er is dan ook geen enkele kans op branduitbreiding", zegt hij. "Oproepen via het noodnummer zijn dus niet nodig: we zijn ter plaatse, en we zijn bezig met de afhandeling."

Het is al de 3e brand op nog geen week tijd.
