Sharp eyes on Palmerston North's CCTV monitors helped police intercept a man seen allegedly presenting a firearm towards a group of people.
A man has been arrested and a firearm seized as a result.
The incident began early Friday morning when CCTV camera operators alerted police to what appeared to be a man presenting a firearm towards a group of people in the city's Square.
Police rushed to the area and, with further help from the CCTV team, officers found the alleged offender nearby.
He was taken into custody without incident.
Inquiries led to the recovery of a firearm, live ammunition and drugs from a nearby vehicle.
The incident was a great example of teamwork in frontline policing, Acting Inspector Nick Lewer, Manawatū Police, said.
"The operators' ability to identify risk early, communicate clearly and support officers in real time was instrumental in ensuring a safe and successful outcome," he said.
The operation involved a co-ordinated response from police staff, including a dog team and frontline officers. Working together, they brought the situation under control and removed a firearm from the community.
"This is a great example of how proactive monitoring can prevent harm and help keep our communities safe," Lewer said.
One man, aged 20, was to face firearm and drug charges in Palmerston North District Court.
