Zwar weisen viele Programme schon beim Start auf Aktualisierungen hin, häufig passt der Zeitpunkt aber nicht. Im Hauptfenster listet Updatest nicht nur verfügbare Updates auf, sondern auch alle installierten Programme. Diese ordnet das Tool der jeweiligen Update-Quelle zu. So nutzen viele Entwickler das Sparkle-Framework, um beim Start nach Aktualisierungen zu suchen und die Installation anzustoßen.
