Behind the scenes, he has taken on another role: Diplomatic emissary charged with helping rebuild the United Arab Emirates’ relationship with Iran.

In the three months since the regional war began, Abu Dhabi’s initially hawkish stance gave way to a more pragmatic approach built upon engaging with its bigger neighbor. Sheikh Tahnoon, also the UAE’s national security advisor, played a key role in that process, according to people familiar with the matter, who declined to be named discussing private matters.
