Mindanao quake death toll climbs to 78; 1.5 million affected

The death toll from a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao has risen to 78, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). Of these, 57 fatalities were recorded in Region XII, including 33 in Sarangani and 24 in South Cotabato, while Region XI reported 21 deaths, with 20 from Davao Occidental and one from Davao del Sur. The increase in the death toll was attributed to the retrieval of seven additional bodies and the confirmation of three previously listed as missing.

MANILA, Philippines — The death toll from the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that shook Mindanao last week has risen to 65, as of 6 a.m. on Monday, June 15, Office of Civil Defense (OCD) deputy administrator Raffy Alejandro said in a press briefing.

He noted that most of the deaths were due to earthquake-induced landslides and fallen debris.

Meanwhile, 36 people were reported missing, and 1,400 were reported injured from the earthquake in the Davao Region and Soccsksargen, Alejandro added.

Asked whether there were still any signs of life among the locations of the reported missing persons, Alejandro pointed to Jose Abad Santos town in Davao Occidental.

“One of the areas there, I think, the team has already pulled out or called off the search and rescue because it’s immense. It was a mountain that really came down, so it’s very hard,” he explained.

“So, we’ve rechanneled resources to other areas that need relief teams,” he added.

The magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck 32 kilometers southwest of Maasim, Sarangani at 7:37 a.m. on June 8, triggering multiple aftershocks across parts of Mindanao.

Of the 624,000 individuals affected so far, around 57,000 people were taking shelter outside evacuation centers, while 14,200 individuals were taking shelter inside 37 evacuation centers across the affected regions.

Joining the briefing through teleconferencing, OCD administrator Harold Cabreros said relief teams on the ground have begun providing food, water and temporary shelter to the affected people, particularly the hard-hit areas of Glan, Sarangani; General Santos City; and Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental.

“Although, for now, we know many of their homes have been destroyed. That’s why we’re in need for additional temporary shelters like family tents, tarpaulins and so on,” Cabreros explained.

“We’re trying to find a way to add the temporary shelters that we can give out,” he added.

Alejandro also noted that the value of the damage on public and private infrastructures has reached P1.13 billion so far.
