Ownership & classification
Founded: 2014
Ownership
N1 Srbija is operated by Adria News d.o.o., the Serbian arm of the Luxembourg-registered telecom-and-media conglomerate United Group, which launched N1 as a 24-hour CNN-affiliated cable news channel on 30 October 2014. United Group has passed through several private-equity hands: U.S. fund KKR, then BC Partners (2019), with founder Dragan Solak long holding a significant minority stake. As of mid-2026 United Group has agreed to sell Adria News (N1 and Nova TV) to the investment vehicle Alpac Capital, a move press-freedom groups warn could expose the outlet to political pressure.
Funding
N1 is a commercial cable channel funded through carriage/subscription fees from cable operators and advertising, backed by the resources of parent United Group rather than by the state or a political party.
Affiliation & stance
N1 is regarded as one of Serbia's last major editorially independent broadcasters, known for critical coverage of the ruling SNS government and President Vucic, and it carries no party or state ownership. Because it is privately and commercially owned with an independent newsroom (despite political hostility and a pending ownership change), it is classified INDEPENDENT.

The article discusses comments made by retired judge and CEPRIS member Savo Đurđić regarding the legal qualification 'preparation for the destruction of the constitutional order.' Đurđić claims this term originates from the 'party system of the 90s' and represents 'hostile propaganda,' which is being misused. He warns that the public will increasingly struggle to differentiate between intimidation and the actual dismantling of the constitutional order. The piece includes a call to read more and engage in discussion, but does not provide further elaboration on the legal or political implications.
Ukraine reports two dead after night attacks by Russia, with the death toll in Kiev rising to 30.
At least two people were killed and eight injured in Russian air strikes on the Sumy region and Kryvyj Rih in Ukraine during the night of Thursday to Friday, according to Ukrainian authorities. This follows a large-scale Russian attack on Kyiv earlier in the week which killed at least 30 people and injured around 100 others. In response to the attacks, Ukraine conducted missile strikes on Belgorod in Russia, causing a fire at an energy facility and killing one woman, according to Russian media. The overnight strike on the city of Romny in the Sumy region hit a residential building, killing two women and injuring a man, reported regional administrator Oleh Hryhorov via Telegram. Another seven people were injured in a missile strike on Kryvyj Rih, according to military city administrator Oleksandr Vilkul. In Kyiv, teams discovered three more dead bodies during the night, bringing the total number of victims to 30, according to Reuters citing Ukrainian health authorities. Kyiv's military administrator Tymur Tkačenko stated that the attack injured 99 people. Moscow claimed the extensive attack was a response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, including those carried

Teatro Praga withdraws from BITEF in solidarity with Serbian artists
The Portuguese theater group Teatro Praga has withdrawn from this year’s 59th BITEF (Belgrade International Theater Festival) as a show of solidarity with Serbian artists, cultural workers, and independent organizations facing censorship and political pressure. The group was set to perform their play 'Audição,' which premiered last year during the celebration of the group’s 30th anniversary. In their statement, Teatro Praga expressed concern over the current political and cultural context, citing reports of government interference in the arts sector, including allegations of censorship and political pressure on artists. They argue that participating in the festival under these conditions could be misinterpreted as legitimizing such practices, prompting their decision to withdraw. The festival, scheduled from September 14 to 20, features seven plays from various countries, including Serbia. This withdrawal comes amid ongoing institutional crises at BITEF, marked by disputes over management, funding, and artistic autonomy, with past incidents involving the removal of a Swiss director’s play due to alleged censorship.

Threats against Vidojković and Kulać reported to the Prosecutor's Office for High-Tech Crime
The Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) has reported to the High-Tech Crime Prosecutor's Office that new threats targeting authors of the program 'Dobar loš zao' and journalists Marko Vidojković and Nenad Kulačin have been sent via the network Iks. The association warns that such constant threats against media workers could have harmful and far-reaching consequences. President of ANEM's Executive Board, Veran Matić, emphasized that these threats endanger the safety of Kulačin and Vidojković, as well as their families, noting that many of the threats received have not yet been resolved or perpetrators identified. He warned that Kulačin might also need to leave the country, as Vidojković did, and called on authorities to process this case to punish the offenders.

Police denied that there had been an incident at Music Week: "There was panic, there was no stabbing"
The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP) and Emergency Services denied reports circulating on social media that there was an incident at the closing night of the Belgrade Music Week festival at Ušće last night, where multiple people were injured. According to MUP, a rumor spread that several individuals had been stabbed with a knife, causing panic, but no stabbing occurred. They stated that everyone claimed they only heard about the incident and no one saw it or was injured. When asked about a video from social media showing police officers leading someone away, MUP explained it was a response to some individuals due to bad behavior. Emergency Services confirmed they did not have any interventions at the location. Earlier, Belgrade Music Week issued a statement saying false and unverified information caused public concern among those in the front rows. The statement noted that no such incidents were recorded by the relevant authorities, including security services, police units, and emergency teams stationed at the venue throughout the event. It clarified that the video circulating online showed a routine and timely action by the responsible authorities against an individual due to a

Polish officials: Ukraine knows not to glorify criminals for EU membership, as Croatia did before
Polish officials, including Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Vladislav Košnjak-Kamiš, have expressed concerns over Ukraine's commemoration of nationalist groups like the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), which collaborated with Nazis during World War II and was responsible for ethnic cleansing in regions such as Volhynia and Galicia. Poland has warned that Ukraine must avoid glorifying war criminals if it seeks European Union membership, citing Croatia’s example of not honoring controversial wartime figures upon joining the EU. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski emphasized that entering the EU requires mutual trust based on truth and reconciliation, contrasting Ukraine’s removal of Soviet-era monuments with Russia’s continued reverence for Lenin. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiha attempted to ease tensions by stating that Ukraine values honesty and reconciliation, but discussions remain ongoing.

Literature as Disobedience: Andreas von Beckerath opens the 18th Krokodil Festival, which will be held in Vienna, Austria.
Andreas von Beckerath, the Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Serbia, opened the 18th Krokodil Festival in Belgrade, emphasizing the importance of literature as a form of resistance in societies under pressure. The festival, themed 'Literature as Disobedience,' took place at the Museum of Yugoslavia and in Belgrade's Hyde Park, highlighting the role of artistic freedom and public debate in supporting democracy. Von Beckerath linked Serbia's European integration to the development of a democratic culture that allows independent voices to thrive. The festival's director, Vladimir Arsenijevic, stated that the event occurs amid 'troubled social circumstances' and aims to provide a counterbalance to prevailing trends. The festival is supported by several international organizations, including the EU and various embassies.

In the tropical Pacific, El Niño conditions have set in, researchers say.
The article reports that researchers from New Zealand’s Earth Sciences organization (ESNZ) have identified conditions consistent with the El Niño climate phenomenon in the tropical Pacific. They warn that impacts on New Zealand’s weather are likely to intensify over the coming months. The ESNZ joined other organizations in Australia, Japan, and the U.S. in confirming the development of El Niño, which is expected to reach strong intensity between July and September. The effects are projected to peak during the Southern Hemisphere summer, spanning late 2023 into early 2024. According to lead researcher Chris Brandolini, this El Niño event is at least comparable in strength to five of the strongest recorded El Niños in modern history. The article outlines regional rainfall expectations, noting potential below-average precipitation in some areas and above-normal levels in others. It also mentions possible temperature fluctuations and increased wind variability later in the year. Additionally, it notes two lower-probability risks: sudden stratospheric warming and the occurrence of a tropical cyclone outside the typical season, both historically linked to El Niño. Brandolini connects the

Dimitrijević: Amendments to the Law on Financing Political Activities do not guarantee that we will have a higher quality electoral process
In Serbia, the Public Consultation on the Draft Law amending the Law on Financing of Political Activities has concluded in the National Assembly. The proposal was introduced by SNS MP Miroslav Petrašinović, who claims it meets the requirements set by ODIHR and the opposition. However, Pavle Dimitrijević from CRTE argues that even the best version of these amendments does not guarantee a better electoral process. He highlights several shortcomings in the proposed changes, including issues related to non-punishability, deadlines for handling reports by the Agency for Prevention of Corruption, document submission procedures, reduced spending limits for campaigns, regulation of credits and debts, and stricter control over potential misuse of funds. Dimitrijević warns that the rules could be selectively applied, leading to continued unethical behavior by political actors despite new regulations.

The article states that temperatures will remain above 25°C throughout the night in Belgrade and parts of Vojvodina. It forecasts continued hot and dry conditions through tomorrow, with temperatures potentially reaching 40°C again, particularly in Vojvodina and Pomoravlje. After noon, increased cloud cover and localized thunderstorms with hail are expected in southern and central Serbia, while some areas in the north may see rain during the night. By Wednesday, most of Serbia will experience clouds and scattered thunderstorms. Shikorski to Russia: We know what you are planning against Poland, don't

Activist after giving a statement to the police: Work on the Sava embankment is carried out despite the court's decision
Activists from the group 'Za naš kej'—Dušan Čavić and Branislav Tomić—were released after giving a statement at the police station in Surčin, following a verbal dispute at the Savski Nasip site. Tomić told N1 that construction work continues at the site despite a decision by the Administrative Court to suspend it until the factual situation is clarified. The activists called the police to check whether the works were being carried out in violation of the court order. They claim that workers stop working when they arrive but resume once they leave. According to Tomić, the company 'Srbijavode,' which is conducting the work, claims these projects are important for the EXPO event, though he argues they lack public significance and serve private interests.
