Europe hits 40 degrees Celsius as heatwave threatens tourism industry, wildlife

Europe experienced a severe heatwave on June 21, with temperatures approaching 40 degrees Celsius in multiple regions. This extreme weather event caused disruptions across the continent, affecting transportation, wildlife, and tourism. Several Italian cities, including Bologna, Florence, Milan, and Turin, were under red alerts due to the intense heat. In Rome, pilgrims sought shade using parasols and umbrellas while attending a religious service led by the Pope. The heatwave was attributed to a high-pressure system known as the 'African anticyclone,' which transported hot air from the Sahara into Europe, creating a 'heat dome' effect that trapped rising temperatures. Similar extreme temperatures were recorded earlier in the month in the UK.
