Two women have been left fighting for their lives after a telegraph pole fell onto them at a busy train station .

An air ambulance raced to the scene in Rhondda, Wales at 12:50pm on Thursday after reports the women had been left trapped underneath the pole.

One of the women is believed to have suffered "life-threatening" injuries while the other was also described as critical following the incident at Pontyclun train station.

The pole, which had live electricity wires, struck the women at the car park of the station before they were rushed to University Hospital of Wales.

A police spokesperson said: " South Wales Police was called at 12.50pm this afternoon to the car park for Pontyclun train station to reports of two women trapped underneath a telegraph pole.

"The women have been taken to University Hospital of Wales where they continue to receive medical treatment."

Pontyclun station, which is unstaffed, is located on the south Wales line between Cardiff and Maesteg and occasionally serves regional Swanline services running between Cardiff Central and Swansea.
