Het Amerikaanse ministerie van Handel heeft zorgen geuit tegen de top van chipmachinefabrikant ASML over een van hun zeer geavanceerde chipmachines die in China zou zijn. Dat hebben bronnen rondom het Amerikaanse ministerie tegen persbureau Bloomberg gezegd.
Als dit klopt dan zou het bedrijf uit Veldhoven exportrestricties hebben overtreden. ASML ontkent dit dan ook stellig. "ASML heeft nooit een geavanceerde machine aan China geleverd, noch onderdelen die nodig zijn voor het gebruik van de machine."
Het bedrijf laat in een reactie weten dat het onmogelijk is dat China zo'n EUV-machine van ASML in handen heeft. De machines zijn ontzettend groot en haast onmogelijk ongemerkt te vervoeren. Bovendien is het volgens ASML onmogelijk dat China vervolgens iets met de machine kan, omdat ze de zeer gespecialiseerde kennis missen om het apparaat te bedienen.
AI-grootmacht
De Verenigde Staten zijn verwikkeld in een harde strijd met China om de AI-grootmacht te blijven. De machines van ASML zijn nodig om de chips te maken die nodig zijn voor AI.
De VS heeft ASML al vaker beschuldigd van het verkopen van deze specifieke machines aan China. Verder dan vermoedens kwam het nooit.
Bloomberg heeft het ministerie meermaals gevraagd of er bewijs is voor de aantijgingen, maar een reactie bleef uit. Waarom de VS nu met deze beschuldigingen komt, blijft onduidelijk.
