Un bombardier lourd américain de type B-52 Stratofortress s’est écrasé lundi en Californie peu après son décollage, a annoncé la base aérienne d’Edwards, qui n’a pas fait état de victime dans l’immédiat. «Un B-52 Stratofortress de l’ US Air Force s’est écrasé peu après son décollage sur l’aérodrome d’Edwards à 11h20» (20h20 en France), a écrit la base sur Facebook, indiquant que «les secours étaient immédiatement intervenus et (que) l’opération était en cours» . Aucune information sur d’éventuelles victimes n’était disponible dans l’immédiat et un porte-parole de la base a refusé de fournir davantage d’informations.
Des images filmées d’un hélicoptère ont montré une large zone calcinée aux abords de la base, située à environ 95 kilomètres au nord de Los Angeles, dans une zone désertique. Un journaliste à bord de l’hélicoptère a fait état d’un «important panache» de fumée noire s’élevant dans le ciel après l’accident. Plusieurs véhicules de secours sont déployés à proximité des lieux.

Le B-52 est en service au sein de l’US Air Force depuis les années 1950. Doté d’un long rayon d’action pouvant atteindre 14.160 kilomètres, ce bombardier est capable de transporter une charge nucléaire.
