Whether they were agreeing or arguing, the new countries that emerged across the Americas after the American Revolution influenced each other. Together, they helped shape the global development of modern democracy and the social and political movements that have shaped it ever since.

EVANSTON, ILLINOIS—Early Americans often believed that their revolution was for the whole world and for all time. “Freedom hath been hunted round the globe,” Thomas Paine declared in 1776, and by becoming “an asylum for mankind,” the United States could rescue it for the ages. “Posterity,” the English-born radical prophesied, would be “affected even to the end of time, by the proceedings now.”
