Taiwan President Lai Ching-te appealed for the world’s media to defy China’s pressure campaign against Taipei, at a rare briefing convened as Beijing escalates its efforts to isolate the island.

Lai outlined a far reaching campaign of “transnational repression” aimed at Taiwan during a briefing in the island’s capital city on Thursday. He praised the “integrity” of those facing such tactics from China’s Communist Party, which considers democratic Taiwan its own despite never having ruled it.
