K havárii došlo v pondělí na letecké základně Edwards, legendárním centru amerických zkušebních letů asi 160 kilometrů severně od Los Angeles. Letoun B-52 podle amerického letectva plnil rutinní testovací misi související s modernizací radarových systémů. Jen několik sekund po odlepení od ranveje se však stroj zřítil zpět na letiště a explodoval v mohutné ohnivé kouli.

Nad pouští se okamžitě zvedl hustý černý dým viditelný na desítky kilometrů. Letecké záběry později ukázaly rozsáhlou ohořelou plochu větší než fotbalové hřiště. „Velmi rychle bylo jasné, že nehodu nemohl nikdo přežít,“ uvedl plukovník James Hayes z amerického letectva.

Na palubě byli vojáci, civilní zaměstnanci vlády i soukromí kontraktoři. Společnost Boeing potvrdila, že mezi oběťmi jsou také dva její zaměstnanci. Příčina nehody zatím není známá, přičemž vyšetřování potrvá týdny až měsíce.
Co je B-52 Stratofortress?
B-52 není jen obyčejný bombardér. Je to létající symbol americké moci, který vznikl v době vrcholící studené války. První prototyp vzlétl už v roce 1952, letoun byl původně navržen jako nosič jaderných zbraní schopný zasáhnout Sovětský svaz z druhé strany planety.

Obří osmimotorový stroj se šípovým křídlem dokáže nést až 31,75 tuny výzbroje, od klasických bomb přes přesně naváděné střely až po jaderné hlavice. Bez doplňování paliva uletí přes 12 800 kilometrů a operovat může ve výškách okolo 15 kilometrů.

Přestože je jeho konstrukce stará už více než sedm desetiletí, americké letectvo s B-52 stále počítá minimálně do poloviny tohoto století. Modernizované verze B-52H dostávají nové motory, radary i avioniku. Pentagon totiž tvrdí, že žádný jiný bombardér nenabízí takovou kombinaci doletu, nosnosti a nízkých provozních nákladů.
Letadlo, které přežilo generace válek
Letouny B-52 bojovaly ve Vietnamu, během války v Perském zálivu, v Afghánistánu i při operacích proti Islámskému státu a před několika týdny i proti Íránu. Jejich charakteristický hukot osmi proudových motorů se stal jedním z nejznámějších zvuků vojenského letectví.
