Την επιλογή των πρώην αποθηκών Σκουλούδη, στο 10ο χιλιόμετρο της Εθνικής Οδού Ηρακλείου - Μοιρών, ως προσωρινού χώρου φιλοξενίας και διαχείρισης μεταναστευτικών ροών στο Ηράκλειο ανακοίνωσε ο υπουργός Μετανάστευσης και Ασύλου, Θάνος Πλεύρης , ενημερώνοντας σχετικά τον περιφερειάρχη Κρήτης, Σταύρο Αρναουτάκη, και τον δήμαρχο Ηρακλείου, Αλέξη Καλοκαιρινό.
Σύμφωνα με πηγές από το υπουργείο Μετανάστευσης και Ασύλου, ήδη, κλιμάκια του υπουργείου έχουν πραγματοποιήσει αυτοψία στον συγκεκριμένο χώρο και βρίσκονται σε συνεννόηση με τον ιδιοκτήτη του ακινήτου, ώστε να προχωρήσουν οι αναγκαίες τεχνικές παρεμβάσεις και οι προβλεπόμενες διαδικασίες για τη λειτουργία του εντός του Ιουλίου.
Ο χώρος θα λειτουργήσει ως προσωρινή κλειστή δομή, όπως ο εκθεσιακός χώρος της Αγυιάς στα Χανιά, χωρίς καμία επιβάρυνση στην τοπική κοινωνία, σύμφωνα με τις ίδιες πηγές. Η επιλογή αυτή του υπουργείου έρχεται αφού εξαντλήθηκε η συζήτηση με την τοπική αυτοδιοίκηση όλο το προηγούμενο διάστημα και καθώς πλέον ο προσωρινός χώρος στο Ψυγείο είναι ακατάλληλος.
Σύμφωνα με το CRETA24, κάτοικοι των Αθανάτων και των κοντινών περιοχών αντιδρούν στη δημιουργία δομής μεταναστών στο συγκεκριμένο ακίνητο.
