Izvanredni izbori, održani jučer, raspisani su s jednim ciljem: omogućiti Burnhamu povratak u britanski parlament i otvoriti mu put prema Downing Streetu 10. Burnham, gradonačelnik Velikog Manchestera (Greater Manchester), već se dulje vrijeme smatra laburističkim političarom s najboljim izgledima da smijeni sve nepopularnijeg Starmera.

Nakon prebrojavanja svih glasova u ranim jutarnjim satima pokazalo se da je taj politički rizik uspio. Burnham je osvojio 55 posto glasova i uvjerljivo pobijedio Roberta Kenyona iz desne populističke stranke Reform UK, koji je dobio 35 posto. Time je britanska politika ušla u novo razdoblje neizvjesnosti dok Burnham priprema sljedeće poteze.

"Svi znaju da politika ne funkcionira. Svi osjećaju da zemlja nije ondje gdje bi trebala biti. Ova bi večer mogla biti prekretnica", poručio je Burnham nakon objave rezultata. Dodao je da je riječ o "prilici za izgradnju nove politike temeljene na jedinstvu i nadi, te okretanju leđa putu koji vodi prema podijeljenoj i mračnoj politici kakvu danas vidimo u Sjedinjenim Državama".

"Ovaj rezultat pomoći će stvaranju zemlje koja pošteno funkcionira za sve i za svaki njezin dio", ustvrdio je.

Težak poraz laburista na lokalnim izborima

Burnham, bivši ministar u laburističkim vladama i gradonačelnik Velikog Manchestera gotovo deset godina, vraća se u parlament u iznimno osjetljivom trenutku za svoju stranku. Nakon uvjerljive pobjede na parlamentarnim izborima 2024., kojom su laburisti prvi put nakon 14 godina ponovno preuzeli vlast u Ujedinjenom Kraljevstvu, popularnost stranke pod Starmerovim vodstvom naglo je pala.

Pad potpore kulminirao je teškim porazima na lokalnim izborima početkom svibnja, dok je Reform UK ostvario značajan rast potpore.

Sve veći broj laburističkih zastupnika počeo je pozivati Starmera na ostavku. Međutim, Burnham nije mogao pokrenuti utrku za vodstvo stranke jer prema pravilima i političkoj praksi samo aktualni zastupnici mogu biti kandidati za čelnika stranke, a samim time i za premijera.

Budući da vođa stranke koja ima parlamentarnu većinu automatski dobiva mandat za sastavljanje vlade od britanskog monarha, nije potrebno raspisivati nove opće izbore.

Izborna jedinica sastavljena od nekadašnjih rudarskih gradova

14. svibnja zastupnik iz Makerfielda Josh Simons objavio je da će odstupiti kako bi omogućio Burnhamu povratak u parlament. "Povlačim se kako bi se Andy Burnham mogao vratiti kući, ponovno izboriti ulazak u parlament i, ako bude izabran, provesti promjene za kojima ova zemlja očajnički vapi", izjavio je tada Simons.

Moćni Nacionalni izvršni odbor Laburističke stranke, koji je ranije blokirao jedan Burnhamov pokušaj povratka u parlament, ovoga mu je puta dao zeleno svjetlo za kandidaturu.

Tako je tijekom posljednjih pet tjedana izborna jedinica Makerfield, skupina manjih nekadašnjih rudarskih gradova na rubu Manchestera u sjeverozapadnoj Engleskoj, postala političko središte Ujedinjenog Kraljevstva.

Političari iz cijele zemlje, kao i novinari iz svih dijelova svijeta, okupili su se kako bi pratili hoće li oko 75.000 registriranih birača odlučiti o političkoj budućnosti gotovo 70 milijuna britanskih građana, piše CNN.
