City Council Wil SG - National Council member Lukas Reimann (SVP) missed the election to the city government

In the Swiss municipality of Wil, a second round of voting is required for both the city presidency and the city council due to no candidate achieving an absolute majority. SVP member and National Councilor Lukas Reimann, who ran for a seat on the five-member city council, received the most votes (3162) but still fell short of the required threshold. Current city council members Andreas Breitenmoser (from the center party) and Jigme Shitsetsang (FDP) also failed to secure the necessary majority for the city presidency. In Wil führte der Rücktritt von Stadtpräsident Hans Mäder (Mitte) zu einer umkämpften Ersatzwahl. Dabei strebt SVP-Schwergewicht und Nationalrat Lukas Reimann einen Sitz im fünfköpfigen Stadtrat an.

Es ist eine prominente Kandidatur. Die Stadt Wil ist traditionell eine Mitte-Hochburg. Bei Exekutivämtern hatte es die SVP bislang schwer.

Auch heute hat es für Lukas Reimann nicht gereicht. Zwar erreichte er im ersten Durchgang die meisten Stimmen (3162). Aber auch er verpasste den Sprung in den Stadtrat.

Beim Stadtpräsidium Wil gilt eine spezielle Regel: Wählbar ist nur, wer schon im Stadtrat sitzt. Von den aktuellen Kandidaten sind das die amtierenden Stadträte Andreas Breitenmoser (Mitte, 2918 Stimmen) und Jigme Shitsetsang (FDP, 2044 Stimmen). Beide verpassten das absolute Mehr für das Stadtpräsidium (3815 Stimmen) heute deutlich.

Zweiter Wahlgang Mitte August

Wer die Voraussetzung fürs Präsidentenamt nicht direkt erfüllt, muss zunächst die Wahl in den Stadtrat schaffen. Michael Sarbach von den Grünen Prowil probierte es mit einer Doppelkandidatur für beide Ämter. Die Wahl misslang ihm in beiden Fällen.

Beim Stadtpräsidium holte er 2037 Stimmen, bei der Ausmarchung für den Stadtrat waren es 2709 Stimmen. Sarbach sitz im Wiler Parlament und im St. Galler Kantonsrat.

Im Wahlkampf betonte Lukas Reimann, dass er nicht Präsident werden und sich mit einem Sitz in der Stadtregierung begnügen will. Ob er bei einer Wahl in die Wiler Exekutive als St. Galler Nationalrat zurücktreten würde, liess er bislang offen.

Der zweite Wahlgang ist für Mitte August angesetzt. Innerhalb einer Woche müssen die Kandidaturen dafür angemeldet werden.
