South Africa welcomes the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, which permanently terminates military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, and commits both nations to refrain from war or the threat of force against one another.

South Africa calls upon all regional stakeholders to honour the reduction in military hostilities. Furthermore, the nation encourages active cooperation toward the comprehensive execution of the MoU and the attainment of a definitive settlement.

Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola said: “The agreement between the United States and Iran hopefully ends the unlawful use of force and violations of the UN Charter in this war.”

The Minister observed that South Africa has always advocated for resolving international conflicts through negotiation rather than armed conflict.

He added that the MoU establishes a foundation for lasting peace and regional security in the Middle East by reinforcing the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the necessity of peace for all nations.

To mitigate negative effects on growth and recovery paths, reopening the Strait of Hormuz is essential for calming global oil market instability and addressing the food and energy security issues impacting developing nations, emphasised Minister Lamola.

He further stated that South Africa expresses its gratitude to the governments of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Sultanate of Oman, and the State of Qatar, as well as other nations that contributed constructively to this process.

In an effort to achieve stability in the Middle East and surrounding regions, South Africa urges all involved parties to commit to the pursuit of a fair and enduring peace.
