Rise of the robots: China releases plan aimed at increasing consumers’ AI options

Chinese authorities have announced a plan to integrate artificial intelligence into consumer goods, services, and the retail sector through 17 new measures. The initiative aims to boost consumption growth by promoting AI-powered products such as robots, smart home devices, and wearable technology. The plan emphasizes expanding AI access to 'millions of households and millions of shops,' focusing on AI life assistants, robotic technologies, and smart infrastructure.

Chinese authorities will promote the further integration of AI and consumption, according to a plan released by the Ministry of Commerce and seven other ministries.

It includes 17 new measures that aim to create new drivers of consumption growth by embedding artificial intelligence in consumer goods, services and the retail and commerce sectors through new smart products, robots, subsidies, infrastructure and standards.

“Accelerating the development of ‘AI Plus Consumption’ helps create new consumption growth points, promote the improvement of consumption quality and the expansion of consumption capacity,” the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement issued on Thursday.

It said the goal was to promote AI’s entry into “millions of households and millions of shops”, with a specific focus on AI products and services.

At the heart of the push are robots and AI life assistants, from humanoid, quadruped and bionic machines to elderly-care and companion robots, promising everything from emotional companionship and health monitoring to mobility help and smart housework.

The effort also extends to a new generation of smart goods, with products such as AI phones, smart homes, connected cars, wearables and AI glasses showcased at platforms like the World AI Conference, major trade expos and a nationwide “AI into Millions of Homes” campaign.
