La celebración de la última Copa del Mundo, la del año 2022 en Qatar, tuvo lugar entre los meses de noviembre y diciembre, de modo que la espera ha sido en este caso un poco más breve.
Entre el jueves 11 de junio y el domingo 19 de julio se celebra el Mundial con importantes novedades . Por primera vez en la historia una Copa del Mundo se reparte entre tres países : México, Canadá y Estados Unidos.
Además, se trata del primer Mundial con 48 selecciones , lo que aumenta el número de partidos hasta 104 . Las eliminatorias no comienzan en los octavos de final, sino en los dieciseisavos, ya que superan la fase de grupos los dos primeros de cada uno de los doce grupos junto con los ocho mejores terceros.
Es decir, la probabilidad de que selecciones muy potentes caigan en la primera fase de la competición es muy baja, aunque el hecho de no hacer las deberes puede conllevar cruces de la muerte directamente en dieciseisavos.
Italia es la gran ausente una edición más, y ya van tres de manera consecutiva . Dos en el caso de Nigeria. Costa Rica, que había participado en los tres últimos Mundiales (en 2022 fue goleada por España en fase de grupos), tampoco se clasificó, al igual que otras selecciones como Dinamarca, Serbia, Polonia o Camerún, presentes igualmente en Qatar.
La ampliación del cupo de participantes a 48 permite ver varios debutantes en una fase final de una Copa del Mundo: Uzbekistán, Jordania, Cabo Verde y Curazao . El combinado africano, de hecho, quedó emparejado en el mismo grupo que la Selección .
