Rusland heeft vannacht opnieuw zware luchtaanvallen uitgevoerd op Oekraïense hoofdstad Kyiv. Daarbij zijn volgens The Kyiv Independent (opent in nieuw venster) vier mensen gedood. 23 anderen raakten gewond, onder wie een zwangere vrouw en een kind.
Bij de aanvallen werd ook een historische kloostercomplex geraakt, waarna brand uitbrak. Het iconische complex Petsjersk Lavra met zijn gouden koepels en witte gevels dateert uit 1051 en is sinds 1990 Unesco-werelderfgoed. Het staat vanwege zijn ondergrondse gangenstelsel ook bekend als het Holenklooster en is een belangrijke trekpleister voor pelgrims en toeristen.
Volgens een Oekraïense militair heeft Rusland in totaal 70 raketten en 611 drones afgevuurd, waarvan Oekraïne 50 raketten en 582 drones heeft onderschept.
Op sociale media roept de geestelijk leider van de Oekraïens-Orthodoxe Kerk op " te bidden (opent in nieuw venster) voor de redding van het heiligdom". "Kyiv wordt zwaar getroffen door de aanvallen. Er is aanzienlijke schade aan de civiele infrastructuur", schrijft de Oekrainese binnenlandminister Klymenko in reactie.

Eeuwenlang had de Russisch-Orthodoxe Kerk hier een belangrijke zetel, maar de weerstand daartegen groeide na de Russische annexatie van de Krim in 2014. Vijf hulpverleners dood
Naast het kloostercomplex werd een woontoren van 25 verdiepingen in de stad geraakt, schrijft het hoofd van de militaire administratie van Kyiv. Daarbij vlogen ook een markt en een supermarkt in brand. Meerdere huizen en auto's vatten vlam door neervallende droneonderdelen. Bij de aanvallen is ook de elektriciteitsvoorziening getroffen. Zeker 140.000 inwoners zitten zonder stroom, schrijft burgemeester Klytsjko op Telegram.
Ook andere plekken in Oekraïne kwamen vannacht onder vuur te liggen. In Charkiv, de tweede stad van het land, werden vijf hulpverleners gedood en raakten vijf anderen gewond, melden lokale functionarissen. In Soemy vielen ook drie gewonden, onder wie een kind.
Rusland maakt melding van een droneaanval op Toela, een industriegebied ten zuiden van Moskou. Volgens de regionale gouverneur vielen daarbij drie doden en drie gewonden, onder wie een kind van 1.
De aanvallen volgden kort nadat bekend werd dat zowel Oekraïne als Rusland op het hoogste niveau contact had gehad met de VS. De Oekraïense president Zelensky belde gisteren president Trump op zijn 80ste verjaardag, voorafgaand aan een G7-bijeenkomst in Frankrijk deze week. De Russische president Poetin zou een klein uur met Trump hebben gesproken.
