New York Knicksi bodo obiskali Belo hišo po osvojitvi naslova v Ligi NBA. Lastnik ekipe James Dolan je namreč sprejel povabilo predsednika Donalda Trumpa, njihovega dolgoletnega navijača. Obisk bo prvi tak v njegovem drugem mandatu.

New York Knicksi se nameravajo odpraviti v Belo hišo, je povedal lastnik ekipe James Dolan , kar pomeni prvi obisk prvaka Lige NBA v času drugega mandata Donalda Trumpa .

"Prejeli smo povabilo iz Bele hiše, ki smo ga sprejeli. Treba je urediti le še podrobnosti," je Dolan povedal v radijskem intervjuju za športno postajo WFAN. "Predsednika sem tudi sam povabil na tekmo. Je moj prijatelj, poznava se že 30 let in ponosen sem, da bom ekipo pripeljal v Belo hišo."
Predstavnik Bele hiše je za CBS News potrdil: "V stiku smo s Knicksi in se veselimo, da bomo ekipo gostili na datum, ki bo določen v bližnji prihodnosti."
Za zdaj ni jasno, kateri igralci Knicksov bodo odpotovali v Belo hišo oziroma ali se bo kdo odločil ostati doma.
Predsednik, ki je dolgoletni navijač Knicksov in osebni prijatelj Dolana, je v preteklem tednu obiskal tekmo v Madison Square Gardnu v New Yorku. Knicksi so to tekmo proti San Antonio Spursom izgubili, kar je bil njihov edini poraz v finalni seriji, nato pa so dobili naslednji dve tekmi in v San Antoniu osvojili naslov prvaka Lige NBA.
Gre za prvi naslov Knicksov po več kot pol stoletja. Donald Trump je po zmagi v objavi na družbenem omrežju Truth Social pohvalil Knickse, Dolana in zvezdniškega organizatorja igre Jalna Brunsona ter dejal, da gre morda za "največji dosežek v zgodovini košarke".

New York Knicksi bodo tako prvi zmagovalci finala Lige NBA, ki bodo obiskali Belo hišo v času drugega mandata Donald Trump, potem ko lanski zmagovalci niso obiskali Bele hiše zaradi " časovnih zapletov ".
V času svojega prvega mandata je Donald Trump leta 2017 umaknil povabilo prvakom Lige NBA, ekipi Golden State Warriors, potem ko je zvezdnik Stephen Curry okleval glede sprejetja " velike časti ". Povabila nato ni poslal niti ob njihovem naslednjem naslovu leto pozneje.
Naslov leta 2019 je osvojila kanadska ekipa Toronto Raptors, medtem ko je bilo prvenstvo leta 2020, ki so ga dobili Los Angeles Lakersi, prekinjeno zaradi pandemije koronavirusa. Trump je sicer že prej izjavil, da ne bi povabil zvezdnika Lakersov LeBrona Jamesa .
