Phivolcs: Over 6,100 aftershocks after magnitude 7.8 Mindanao quake

As of June 15, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded 6,144 aftershocks following a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Southern Mindanao on June 8. Of these, 78 were felt in the affected regions. The earthquake occurred 32 kilometers southwest of Maasim, Sarangani, and triggered multiple aftershocks across parts of Mindanao. Aerial surveys have been conducted over 93 landslides in the Davao Region and Soccsksargen, and no geohazards were reported at the 20 mining sites in the affected areas.

The collapsed structure along Pendatun Avenue, in front of Plaza General in General Santos City, stands as one of the most haunting reminders of the powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Southern Mindanao on Monday, June 8.

Also at the briefing via teleconference, Department of Environment and Natural Resources land geological survey chief Kevin Garas noted that the agency has so far conducted aerial surveys over 93 landslides in Davao Region and Soccsksargen.

Garas added that, of the 20 mining sites in the affected regions, none reported geohazard-related incidents or disruptions to their mining operations.

Alejandro noted that fair weather conditions prevailed over the hardest-hit areas so far.

“Our only worry is, if the weather deteriorates, it will delay or hamper our relief operations especially when we use our air assets,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Garas raised the possibility of “landslide dams,” in which soil and debris from landslides block a water channel and create a dam.

“If it rains, the level of the dam may increase and, if the dam is breached, it may cause floods or flash floods or even debris flow to the communities along the river channel and the downstream communities,” he explained.

“Now, our MGB and the Phivolcs are doing aerial surveys and ground assessments to determine which locations landslide damming took place,” he added. /mr
