Bivši mađarski premijer Viktor Orban ponovo je izabran za predsjednika stranke Fidesz na još jedan jednogodišnji mandat, uprkos porazu te stranke na parlamentarnim izborima održanim 12. aprila.

Fidesz je izgubio vlast od desnog centra okupljenog oko stranke Tisza premijera Petera Magyara, čime je okončana Orbanova višegodišnja dominacija mađarskom politikom.
Orban (62), poznat po zagovaranju modela „neliberalne demokratije“, godinama je bio inspiracija konzervativnim i desničarskim političkim pokretima širom Evrope i Sjedinjenih Američkih Država.
Njegova politička budućnost dovedena je u pitanje nakon izbornog poraza, a pojedini nekadašnji saveznici prvi put su ga javno pozvali da se povuče iz politike. To je bila jedna od rijetkih otvorenih kritika otkako je 2010. godine došao na vlast.
Prema navodima državne novinske agencije MTI, za Orbanov reizbor glasalo je 729 od ukupno 737 delegata na kongresu Fidesza. Protukandidata nije imao.
„ Ne odustajem, nikada, nikada, nikada, nikada, nikada ne odustajem “, poručio je Orban u govoru prije glasanja, naglasivši da preuzima punu odgovornost za izborni poraz.
Dodao je da je Fidesz tokom proteklih 16 godina bio „fantastična vladajuća stranka“, ali da sada mora proći kroz promjene kako bi postao funkcionalna opoziciona snaga spremna za eventualni povratak na vlast.
Na aprilskim izborima stranka Tisza osvojila je dvotrećinsku većinu u parlamentu, što joj omogućava da poništi ustavne promjene koje je Orbanova vlast uvodila tokom prethodnih godina.
Prema anketama javnog mnijenja, podrška Fideszu nastavila je padati i nakon izbora. Istraživanje instituta Publicus iz maja pokazalo je da Tisza uživa podršku 55 posto birača, u odnosu na 53 posto osvojenih na izborima, dok je podrška Fideszu pala na 17 posto sa 39 posto koliko je stranka osvojila u aprilu.
