Canada played against Qatar in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup. Canada scored first through Cyle Larin in the 16th minute. The match took place in Vancouver on June 19 at midnight. Canada's coach Jesse Marsch made several substitutions, including Alphonso Davies who returned from injury but did not play the full 90 minutes. Qatar surprised Switzerland with an early goal by Buale Kuki in the fourth minute of added time during their previous match. Nogometaši Kanade so na uvodni tekmi proti BiH-u prikazali zelo dobro predstavo in iztržili prvo točko na svetovnih prvenstvih. Proti Katarju so v Vancouvru v vlogi favorita.

Kanadčani so predvsem v drugem polčasu navdušili proti BiH (1:1). Selektor Jesse Marsch je zadel z menjavami. Hitri bočni branilec Bayerna Alphonso Davies je okreval po poškodbi stegenske mišice, a še ni pripravljen za vseh 90 minut.

Katar je v četrti minuti sodnikovega dodatka šokiral Švico (1:1), ko je z glavo s sedmih metrov natančno meril Bualem Kuki in poskrbel za veliko presenečenje letošnjega SP-ja.

Katar, ki ga uspešno vodi Julen Lopetegui, se na prejšnjem SP-ju na domačih tleh ni izkazal in je brez točke končal že po predtekmovanju.
