Black Bear continues to tour the city Another day off for Utsunomiya schoolchildren

In Japan, a black bear has been captured after being spotted moving around a city. In Utsunomiya, nearly 100 schools have been closed due to the bear threat, with authorities warning that another bear might still be active in the area. Black bears are classified as endangered globally, but their numbers in Japan have tripled over 15 years partly due to reduced hunting. The bears are entering urban areas in search of food as their natural diet, such as acorns and chestnuts, decreases.

Japanissa karhuista tehdään aiempaa useammin havaintoja kaupungeissa.

Japanin Utsunomiyassa vuorokausia liikkunut mustakarhu on saatu kiinni.

Aikuisesta karhusta saatiin useita havaintoja eri puolilla kaupunkia.

Aasian mustakarhut luokitellaan maailmanlaajuisesti vaarantuneeksi lajiksi. Japanissa niiden määrä on kuitenkin viidessätoista vuodessa kolminkertaistunut muun muassa vähentyneen metsästyksen vuoksi.

Karhut ilmestyvät kaupunkialueille etsimään ravintoa, koska niiden luontainen ravinto, esimerkiksi tammenterhot ja pyökkipähkinät vähenee.
