Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA) - Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, erupted five times on Friday, with ash plumes rising between 300 and 1,000 meters above the summit.
An officer at the Lewotobi Laki-laki Volcano Observation Post, Bramantya Aji Putra Mahendra, reported that five eruptions were recorded between 6 a.m. and noon, producing gray ash plumes rising 300–1,000 meters above the summit.
He said the volcano, which remains at Alert Level III, was clearly visible despite thin mist covering parts of the mountain. Thin white crater smoke was observed rising 50–100 meters above the summit.
Besides the eruptions, officials recorded two gust earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.9-4.4 millimeters and durations of 31-32 seconds, as well as three non-harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 4.4-7.4 millimeters and durations of 85-135 seconds.
According to Bramantya, visual observations showed lava deposits extending about 4.34 kilometers to the northeast and 3.8 kilometers to the west-northwest of the eruption center.
The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) advised residents and visitors not to conduct activities within a 5-kilometer radius of the eruption center.
"People affected by ashfall are advised to wear masks or cover their noses and mouths to protect their respiratory systems from volcanic ash," Bramantya said.
Authorities also warned residents to remain alert to the risk of rain-triggered lava floods in rivers originating from the volcano, particularly in Dulipali, Padang Pasir, Nobo, Nurabelen, Klatanlo, Hokeng Jaya, Boru, and Nawakote during periods of heavy rainfall.
PVMBG urged the public to remain calm, follow instructions from local authorities, and avoid information from unverified sources.
The agency also asked local governments to maintain close coordination with the Lewotobi Laki-laki Volcano Observation Post and PVMBG to obtain the latest information on volcanic activity.
