Somogyi Győző 1942. július 28-án született Budapesten. 1967-ben pappá szentelték, 1968-ban summa cum laude doktori címet szerzett egyháztörténetből. Papként fizikai munkát is végzett, 1975-ben felhagyott a papi szolgálattal. Később szabadfoglalkozású művészként tevékenykedett, és igen sokrétű művészi pályát futott be.
Élete során külföldön, például Párizsban és Rómában is alkotott, az 1980-as évektől kezdődően pedig a Káli-medencében, Salföldön élt. Elsősorban festészettel foglalkozott, 1988-ban Munkácsy Mihály-díjjal, 2012-ben pedig Kossuth-díjjal ismerték el munkáját, emellett számos más díjban is részesült.
