A baleset szombaton történt a Karwendel-hegységben, Mittenwald közelében, az osztrák határnál.
A nyomozók úgy vélik, hogy a hegymászó lábtámaszaként szolgáló szikla leszakadt. A fiatal férfi egy vele egyidős társával mászott fel a csúcsra, leküzdve az útvonal kihívást jelentő szakaszait.
