Lithuania has signed an agreement to secure satellite communications services, with Luxembourg contributing 2.5 million euros to the project, the Lithuanian Defence Ministry said on Wednesday.

The deal was signed in Luxembourg during a meeting between Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas and his Luxembourg counterpart Yuriko Backes, where discussions centred on NATO deterrence and defence, EU security initiatives, and cooperation in the space sector.

Kaunas said the war in Ukraine had demonstrated that satellite communications and other space technologies were now an essential part of modern military operations.

"We value Luxembourg's leadership in the space sector and the opportunity to jointly develop capabilities that will contribute to the efficiency and resilience of the Lithuanian Armed Forces," he said.

The two ministers also discussed how future EU investment in space could be channelled towards strengthening national defence and security capabilities.

Luxembourg has become one of Europe's most significant players in the commercial space industry, hosting a cluster of satellite and space technology companies and providing a framework that has attracted major international operators.
