Lebanon: French soldier killed by accidental fire, announced by the army

A French soldier, Florian Gillet, aged 21, was killed during an accidental shooting while preparing for training exercises in Lebanon. He was part of the 8th Marine Infantry Parachute Regiment based in Castres and had been deployed to Lebanon since June 1st as part of an operational partnership with Lebanese armed forces. The incident was confirmed by the Chief of Staff of the Army and the Minister of the Armed Forces, Catherine Vautrin, who expressed deep sorrow over the death.

Florian Gillet, 21 ans, Ă©tait «engagĂ© au Liban dans le cadre d’une mission de partenariat opĂ©rationnel au profit des forces armĂ©es libanaises» de Saliyeh, dans le sud du pays, a ajoutĂ© le chef d’état-major.

Il Ă©tait dĂ©ployĂ© au Liban depuis le 1er juin, selon un communiquĂ© du ministĂšre des ArmĂ©es. «MalgrĂ© la rapiditĂ© de sa prise en charge, il a malheureusement succombĂ© Ă  ses blessures» , ajoute le communiquĂ©, dans lequel le chef d’état-major des armĂ©es, Fabien Mandon, salue «la mĂ©moire de ce militaire mort en opĂ©ration» .

En avril, deux soldats français, Anicet Girardin, 31 ans, et Florian Montorio, 40 ans, dĂ©ployĂ©s au sein de la Force intĂ©rimaire des Nations unies au Liban (Finul) avaient trouvĂ© la mort, aprĂšs une embuscade attribuĂ©e par la France et l’ONU au Hezbollah, lequel a niĂ© toute implication.

Avant eux, l’adjudant-chef Arnaud Frion (promu major Ă  titre posthume) avait Ă©tĂ© tuĂ© en Irak en mars dans une attaque de drones attribuĂ©e Ă  une milice pro-iranienne.
